Why I Do What I Do: Building a Business That Serves Real People
I would like to share with you a bit more about what I do in my work, not just as a bilingual consultant, but also as a self-employed entrpreneur, building my own company, Normandy Consultancy.
A big part of my day isn’t just working directly with clients, it also involves a lot of behind-the-scenes responsibilities that are essential to running and growing a business. This includes handling things like contracts, client communications, reports, scheduling, invoicing, and making sure everything is properly documented. It’s called administrative work and paperwork, and while it’s not always glamorous, it’s absolutely necessary.
Because I’m running my own consultancy, I’m not only focused on providing language and cultural support to my clients. I also have to manage the structure of the business itself. That means staying organized, keeping records, following legal and financial procedures, and making sure everything is running professionally and efficiently.
It’s a lot of roles and duties to cover , but I enjoy the independence and the challenge. Every small task contributes to the bigger goal of building a strong, reliable company and I’m really proud of that.
One of the best parts of what I do is seeing my clients happy. When someone tells me that my support helped them succeed , secure a deal, or better understand something important, it honestly makes all the hard work worth it.
Knowing that I’ve made a real difference especially as a bilingual consultant where communication is so key gives me a deep sense of purpose and pride. It reminds me why I started this business in the first place. Helping people feel more confident, understood, and supported is incredibly rewarding.
Something really important I want you to know is that my work isn’t distant or just “business for business’ sake.” I work directly with real, everyday people in my community individuals trying to settle into a new country, professionals needing help to express themselves clearly in a second language, small business owners navigating unfamiliar systems, and people facing challenges that I’m often able to guide them through.
What I do as a bilingual consultant is deeply personal. It’s about service, not just strategy. I help people feel understood, supported, and empowered in situations that can often feel intimidating or overwhelming. Whether it’s preparing someone for a visa interview, helping them understand a contract, or coaching them through a job application in a second language - I’m right there beside them.
What makes it truly fulfilling is that I feel appreciated. My clients often tell me how much lighter they feel after working with me - more confident, less stressed, and more in control. That means everything to me. It reminds me that I’m not just offering a service, I’m genuinely helping people move forward in their lives.
So even though I’m running a business and managing all the professional side of things, what drives me is knowing that I’m making a difference in real people’s lives. This isn’t a detached corporate role - it’s community-focused, people-first work, and that’s what makes it so meaningful to me.

During the past year we and one of our friends have consulted Annabelle to assist with numerous problems ranging from essential changes after a death, replacement carte vitale, and arranging appointments for various things including an explanation of what is needed to keep a classic car roadworthy. Throughout Annabelle has been superb and efficient, giving regular updates and helping with follow-ups. She has taken away a lot of the stress which comes from dealing with something new when French is not your first language. Highly recommended - we wish we had found her sooner.
